Runner in green shirt running in the dessert showing 10 tips to beat the heat

10 Tips to Beat the Heat

10 Tips to Beat the Heat

Skeletons on a pink car suggesting 10 tips to beat the heatThe Physicians at Desert Health Specialists want to keep you safe this summer. Check out their top 10 tips to beat the heat!

1) Make sure at all times you are protecting your eyes!  It is important to wear sunglass when outdoors that block out at least 99% of the UVA and UVB rays.  This will help to prevent future eye disease as well as wrinkles.

2) Before leaving the house apply sunscreen to your face and arms.  You may think that you are protected from the sun while driving in the car, but in reality the sun is just as strong in the car as it is out of the car.

3) Make sure you are drinking plenty of fluids.  A good rule of thumb is to drink at least half your body weight in ounces of water every day in order to prevent dehydration.

(Example 150 lbs = 75 oz of water)

4) Eat lightly.  As most of you have probably experienced you are not as hungry during hotter temperatures.  Go for fruits and vegetables during these hotter times to help with digestion and keep you hydrated.

5) When trying to cool down your car open two doors on opposite sides of the car.  Then take one of the doors and move it like a fan about 5 times. This will help to push the hot air out and the cool air in.

6) Make sure you are properly dressed for the heat.  Try to wear light colored, light weight, and dry wicking clothes during those hot summer months.  This will help to keep your body cooler while exercising.

7) If you are going to exercise outside make sure you are going early in the morning.  This is when the temperature is the coolest and less likely to cause heat exhaustion.

8) Try taking a cooler shower.  This will help to lower your body temperature and make you feel more comfortable during those hot summer months.

9) For those pesky sunburns try using aloe vera to help cool the area.

10) Take a family vacation when possible to get away from the Arizona heat!

Lady in black clothes holding her bike showing there Alternative Modalities in Sports Medicine

Sports Medicine Modalities

Alternative Modalities in Sports Medicine

As medicine continues to evolve more an more athletes and weekend warriors are looking for those alternative modalities in sports medicine. These various modalities offer athletes opportunities to recover from certain injuries faster and improve their performance naturally. Listed below are the top 5 ways alternative modalities are being used in Sports Medicine today.

Alternative Modalities in Sports Medicine

  • Regenerative Injection Therapy (RIT)
    • These Non-Surgical injection techniques have emerged to help combat the growing incidence of joint pain and musculoskeletal pain athletes and active people experience. The types of RIT offered now for patients are Prolotherapy, Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) and Stem Cell Therapy. Each of these types of injections have demonstrated superior efficiency compared to conventional treatments like corticosteroid injections or hyaluronic acid treatments. Research is starting to show how injections such as PRP and Stem Cell Therapy are not only helping relieve patients pain, but also slowing the osteoarthritis progression and preventing surgical procedures.
  • Acupuncture/Cupping
    • Acupuncture and cupping have been used for years in helping release tight muscles, and improve blood flow. As we train our muscle become come tight. Acupuncture and cupping work to relieve the fascia and muscle knots that have developed while training. You may have seen pictures of patients after a cupping treatment. They are the ones with the big circle bruises along their back on the legs or where ever else people are having pain/tightness.
  • AMIT Method
    • AMIT Method assess patient muscle inhibitions and imbalances. In short when one has an injury muscle become inhibited as a protective measure. Sometimes these muscles to not reactivate after the trauma and end up causing pain for people. By identifying these inhibition and reactivating the muscles, proper balance can return to the body and pain relief can take place. AMIT Method can also be uses a performance enhancement. You can gain an edge compared to your opponents if you have all your muscle firing compared to your compassion.
  • Specialty Testing
    • Looking to take your diet and nutrition the next level, Food Sensitivity testing helps identify foods that cause inflammation in your body. Inflammation can affect recovery time after training and cause an athlete to heal slower after injury. The next test we recommend is the Adrenal Stress Index. This test can help determine your Cortisol levels. Cortisone is a hormone produced from the adrenal gland used for energy. By running this test we can then help an athlete replenish their cortisol stores helping boost energy and performance.
  • Supplementation
    • Proper supplementation is key for optimizing performance. Certain supplements taken at the right time during training can improve performance and decrease recovery time. Look for a blog in the future on which supplements the Physicians at Desert Health Specialists recommend for all athletes and active people

All of the treatment modalites listed above demonstrate some form of benefit for those in sports medicine. For more information about Regenerative injections, Acupuncture, AMIT Method or Specialty testing click on the appropriate link below.

Ozone gas bubbles used in Ozone Therapy Arizona

Ozone Therapy Arizona

Why should you try Ozone Therapy Arizona?

Ozone therapy or O3 gas is a dynamically unstable molecule.  It has many different therapeutic affects when administered in a medical grade form and in precise therapeutic doses.  It is great for treating a multitude of acute/chronic diseases and it even has a therapeutic use for relieving pain.

The cells that make up the human body love oxygen while diseases caused by fungus, bacteria, viruses, or parasites are anaerobic or in simple terms do not love oxygen.  This means that these microbes are not able to live in environments that have high concentrations of oxygen.  By flooding the body with an ozone treatment it allows the body to protect itself against infections. Medical Ozone can boost your immune system by either stimulating or suppressing the body through your white blood cells

Ozone therapy can increase the energy production in your cells and is able to slow the aging process down.  It has the ability to activate your anti-oxidant system thus reducing the oxidation levels in your body and allowing for proper healing and function of cells. It can reduce the level of acidity in the body, kill bacteria, viruses, and fungus as well as help to eliminate cancer cells when it comes in contact with ozone. It also helps to reduce many cases of chronic pain and has healing properties that help decrease the risk of infections, dental infections, interstitial cystitis, and even diabetes.

Ozone can also be used in conjunction with prolotherapy, a regenerative injection technique that was developed to help stimulate healing for joint and musculoskeletal pain.  It is great for rotator cuff injuries, degenerative disc disease, arthritis, and much more!

Woman grabbing her heal showing plantar fasciitis treatments in arizona

Relief from Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar Fasciitis Treatments in Arizona

Do you have pain first thing in the morning when you step out of bed? If you do this could be a sign that you are or might begin to suffer from Plantar Fasciitis. Checkout below more information regarding plantar fasciitis treatments in Arizona offered at Desert Health Specialists.

What is Plantar Fasciitis

Anatomy of a torn plantar fascia showing Plantar Fasciitis treatment Arizona

Plantar fasciitis is the most common cause of heel pain we see in people ages 40-60 years old.  The plantar fascia is a flat band of tough tissue that supports the arch of the foot. It runs from the heel to the base of the toes. When strained the plantar fascia becomes weak, irritated, swollen and inflamed. As one continues to walk on an irritated foot repeated microscopic tears occur with in the plantar fascia causing a more notable pain. The pain is relieved after extended periods of rest, but upon first step in the morning getting out of bed the pain may return. As your day progresses the pain may gradually lessen, but after long periods of standing the pain will return. Plantar fasciitis may also be associated with “heel spurs” and lead to ankle, knee or even hip pain because of competing for the pain.

Traditional treatments for treating plantar fasciitis include cutting back on the actives that cause you the most pain. Taking a frozen golf ball and rolling it under the bottom of your foot or injecting the fascia with a cortisone injection. Bracing, tapping and night splints are a few more treatments for plantar fasciitis. In the long run, these treatments do more damage then good. Cortisone injections have shown to be beneficial in providing short-term relief, but long-term damage is occurred because the ligament integrity is weakened with each injection. If none of these treatments work then the recommended treatment is to has have a MAJOR Surgery to cut the plantar fascia.

Alternative Treatments

As you can see none of these treatments are really addressing why the ligament is weak in the first place and providing treatment to strengthen it. This is where regenerative injections work the best. Regenerative injections work to repair the damaged plantar fascia by strengthening the facia. In doing so it provides support to the arch of the foot and decreases pain. Regenerative injections work to stimulate your own body’s healing mechanisms to repair the area of damage. Regenerative injections do not require you to stop the actives that are causing you pain, like traditional treatments. There is no major surgery involved and depending on the regenerative injection therapy chose you may become pain free in as little as 1 treatment.

Key Take Home Points:

  • Regenerative Injections Stimulate Healing and Strengthen the Plantar Fascia
  • Cortisone Injections weaken the ligament and increase chance of surgery

Running on the sand showing the benefits amniotic stem cell treatment in Arizona

Stem Cell Therapy it’s Worth a Shot?

Amniotic Stem Cell Therapy it’s Worth a Shot?

Desert Health Specialists prides themselves of providing patients cutting edge treatment options such as Amniotic stem cell therapy for pain relief.  If you or someone you know is facing a decision of whether or not they should have surgery why not try this proven alternative treatment.  Amniotic stem cell therapy enhances the repair of damaged ligaments, tendons, and cartilage and can help to restore the body naturally to its optimal functionality.  These treatments are even being used by professional athletes in all sports and this could be that game changer treatment you have been looking for.

Amniotic stem cell therapy is a minimally invasive treatment that could be of benefit to you.  Stem cells are found in different tissues in the body and we use them to regenerate various tissues when injected into different sites of the body.  At Desert Health Specialists we use Amniotic Stem Cells because there is no painful procedure involved to extracting stem cell from your body, you just reap the benefits after the treatment is done.

Stem cell injections have the potential of making NEW CELLS where there was damaged tissue and in doing so provides pain relief.  Cortisone injections on the other hand simply provide an anti-inflammatory response to help reduce pain, but does not contain any regenerative cells or growth factors that lead to repair of the damaged tissue.  A great example of an amniotic stem cell treatment would be for a rotator cuff or ACL tear.  Normally these tears would need a surgical procedure to be repaired.  However, when injecting amniotic stem cells at the site of injury, either rotator cuff or ACL, allowing healing to occur without surgery or as we say Naturally!

The National Institute of Health considers stem cell therapy to be one of the most promising alternatives to invasive therapies.  This is not only because it promotes healing, but is a natural way to achieve the healing that your body requires.

In summary, this Stem Cell Therapy procedure appears to have a very good safety record and potentially more effective in the treatment of degenerative arthritis than standard treatments such as steroid or hyluronic injections. As you can see it’s a less invasive procedure then a joint replacement for patients. There is absolutely no guarantee that this procedure will eliminate arthritis pain, but the trends in current study populations appear to show some promise.

Picture of Thyroid gland and how to manage it naturally

Managing Your Thyroid, Naturally!

Did you know that the thyroid is one of the most important glands in the body.  The thyroid is located in the neck just below the Adam’s apple.  While it is a small gland it plays a large role in the function of many different organs in the body including heart, brain, kidneys, and skin.

Hypothyroidism, or low thyroid function, is a silent epidemic, starting to sweep across America. People can suffer for years with symptoms that our conventional medical system frequently doesn’t know how to treat.

A chart showing how thyroid gland functions and how to manage naturallySo what are a few easy things you can do at home to boost your Thyroid function:

  1. Go 100% gluten-free
    • Eating gluten can increase the autoimmune attack on your thyroid. This is because the molecular composition of your thyroid tissue is almost identical to that of gluten. So for those of you with Hashimoto’s or Hypothyroidism, being gluten free is where you should be.
  2. Address Underlying Food Sensitivities
    • Just like our body’s attack on the thyroid when gluten is consumed, other foods we eat can cause similar types of symptoms. Being tested for food sensitivities is the easiest way to test and by removing those offending foods can decrease your overall inflammatory response.  For more information regarding food sensitivities Click Here.
  3. Treat Your Adrenal Fatigue
    • Did you know that your thyroid and adrenal glands share an intimate connection in your body? We find it very common to see patient with hypothyroidism and some level of adrenal fatigue. Here are a few ways you can improve your adrenal function: quality sleep, exercise, clean healthy diet, and adrenal testing. To learn more about adrenal testing Click Here.
  4. Improve Nutrition
    • Nutritional deficiencies are probably not the cause of your  hypothyroidism, but not having enough of these micronutrients and minerals can aggravate symptoms. Consult with your doctor regarding which of these supplements will help benefit you: vitamin D, iron, omega-3 fatty acids, selenium, zinc, copper, vitamin A, B vitamins, and iodine
  5. Say No To Caffeine & Sugar
    • Reducing or eliminating caffeine and sugar from your diet helps decrease the constant inflammation in your body. Not only will reducing these substances from your diet help balance your thyroid symptoms, but there is a chance it could help you lose weight.
