10 Tips to Beat the Heat

10 Tips to Beat the Heat

1) Make sure at all times you are protecting your eyes!  It is important to wear sunglass when outdoors that block out at least 99% of the UVA and UVB rays.  This will help to prevent future eye disease as well as wrinkles.

2) Before leaving the house apply sunscreen to your face and arms.  You may think that you are protected from the sun while driving in the car, but in reality the sun is just as strong in the car as it is out of the car.

3) Make sure you are drinking plenty of fluids.  A good rule of thumb is to drink at least half your body weight in ounces of water every day in order to prevent dehydration.

(Example 150 lbs = 75 oz of water)

4) Eat lightly.  As most of you have probably experienced you are not as hungry during hotter temperatures.  Go for fruits and vegetables during these hotter times to help with digestion and keep you hydrated.

5) When trying to cool down your car open two doors on opposite sides of the car.  Then take one of the doors and move it like a fan about 5 times. This will help to push the hot air out and the cool air in.

6) Make sure you are properly dressed for the heat.  Try to wear light colored, light weight, and dry wicking clothes during those hot summer months.  This will help to keep your body cooler while exercising.

7) If you are going to exercise outside make sure you are going early in the morning.  This is when the temperature is the coolest and less likely to cause heat exhaustion.

8) Try taking a cooler shower.  This will help to lower your body temperature and make you feel more comfortable during those hot summer months.

9) For those pesky sunburns try using aloe vera to help cool the area.

10) Take a family vacation when possible to get away from the Arizona heat!

What is Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar fasciitis is the most common cause of heel pain we see in people ages 40-60 years old.  The plantar fascia is a flat band of tough tissue that supports the arch of the foot. It runs from the heel to the base of the toes. When strained the plantar fascia becomes weak, irritated, swollen and inflamed. As one continues to walk on an irritated foot repeated microscopic tears occur with in the plantar fascia causing a more notable pain. The pain is relieved after extended periods of rest, but upon first step in the morning getting out of bed the pain may return. As your day progresses the pain may gradually lessen, but after long periods of standing the pain will return. Plantar fasciitis may also be associated with “heel spurs” and lead to ankle, knee or even hip pain because of competing for the pain.

Traditional treatments for treating plantar fasciitis include cutting back on the actives that cause you the most pain. Taking a frozen golf ball and rolling it under the bottom of your foot or injecting the fascia with a cortisone injection. Bracing, tapping and night splints are a few more treatments for plantar fasciitis. In the long run, these treatments do more damage then good. Cortisone injections have shown to be beneficial in providing short-term relief, but long-term damage is occurred because the ligament integrity is weakened with each injection. If none of these treatments work then the recommended treatment is to has have a MAJOR Surgery to cut the plantar fascia.

Alternative Treatments

As you can see none of these treatments are really addressing why the ligament is weak in the first place and providing treatment to strengthen it. This is where regenerative injections work the best. Regenerative injections work to repair the damaged plantar fascia by strengthening the facia. In doing so it provides support to the arch of the foot and decreases pain. Regenerative injections work to stimulate your own body’s healing mechanisms to repair the area of damage.
